“ This place is such a fun spot with a great atmosphere! The tiki bar vibe makes it feel like a hidden getaway, and the drinks are top-notch.. creative and well-balanced. As for the food, everything I tried was delicious! The Pad Thai had great flavor with just the right amount of spice, the Garlic Noodles were rich and savory, and the tacos were packed with fresh ingredients and bold flavors. The only downside is that it's a bit on the pricey side, but considering the quality of the food, drinks, and experience, it's still worth it for a fun night out. I'd definitely come back! ”
“ The Grass Skirt in Pacific Beach is a fantastic find. It's a tiki speakeasy and is as fun as it comes. They're as serious about the theme as they are the quality cocktails. The second you enter you feel like you stumbled into some secret bar cave in Hawaii, but aren't supposed to be there. I couldn't agree more with my beautiful wife. She said the place reminds her of the famous Hawaii Brady Bunch episode. You enter into a Poke shop where you're greeted by the host. They ask you which bar you're going to which we didn't understand at first. Yes there's a second hidden speakeasy, but that's for later. Once you decide they walk you through what looks like a giant industrial fridge. They spared no detail when creating the tiki experience. From the thatched hut booths to the fire features it's theatrical but not cheesy. There's a fun window video screen in the center of the lava rock fireplace that plays dramatic videos of waterfalls, fire/lava waterfalls and other eerie Polynesian imagery. The spooky tiki hologram floating in the video foreground is a nice touch. (Photo #9). Oh the music is amazing also to set the perfect tiki mood. You can imagine they have an epic collection of tiki glasses. My beautiful wife was drawn to the giant toucan glass which is the Bird of Paradise. It was as tasty as the glass was adorbs. 2 kinds of run, coconut-washed Campari, pineapple, Demerara syrup and lime. That's the definition of vacation heaven IMO (photo #3) I ordered the Panda's Pandan Colada which is a fancy pina colada that includes multiple runs, banana, pineapple, coconut, cinnamon and chocolate. It was AMAZING!!! Oh did I mention it comes with a flaming half lime the bartender torches and serves with a sparked fire side show . (Photo #5-6) We noticed a funny thing while we were there. The patrons love the vibe so much that many were coming in with Hawaiian shirts on. That's the mark of a great joint. Next time you're in San Diego run to the Grass Skirt in Pacific Beach if you want a fun cocktail experience. Salute ”
“ Although I'm not a tiki bar fan, this place is pretty cool. The speakeasy set up is top notch, although I have yet to actually try the poke. The service is good but they do get busy ”
“ Came here on Christmas Eve after reading about Christmas-decorated bars in the area. This is technically a speakeasy so we had trouble finding it at first. We circled the place a few times before realizing the correct door! Once inside, the place was beautifully decorated for the holiday! We were seated at the bar and had a great bartender. Very helpful when deciding drinks. We were sure to tip well since he was working on Christmas Eve. The Merry Spitzmas was my favorite! Almost too easy to drink! Definitely recommend -- especially in the holiday season! ”
“ First Impressions: Stepping into The Grass Skirt felt like wandering into a secret tropical hideaway that had been overtaken by holiday elves. The colorful string lights, whimsical tiki decor, and the crackling warmth of the fire added a cozy, magical vibe to the place. It's the kind of spot that immediately makes you feel like you're on vacation--even if you're only escaping from reality for a few hours. Interactions: The staff at The Grass Skirt were friendly, attentive, and genuinely seemed to enjoy the festive atmosphere as much as the customers. They didn't just take my order; they celebrated it. From the server's enthusiastic rundown of the menu to their perfectly timed check-ins to make sure my drink stayed full and my noodles stayed spicy, I felt well cared for. They even seemed excited about the Pig Maco Bao, which, let's face it, deserves its own fan club. Service: The service was as smooth as the vibes. Also Victoria rocks! Food: This is where The Grass Skirt truly shines. Let's start with the Pig Mac Bao--a bao taco that looks like it's about to wink at you but instead hits you with layers of rich, tender pork and a perfectly fluffy bun. It's as quirky as it is delicious, and yes, it tastes as good as it looks. Then came the Beef Hot and Spicy Garlic Noods, and wow. The noodles were perfectly cooked, the beef was tender and flavorful, and the garlic hit just the right notes of spicy and savory. Each bite was like a little tropical dance party for my taste buds, and I couldn't get enough. Value: For the quality of food, the fun drinks, and the unmatched atmosphere, The Grass Skirt delivers great value. Sure, it's a little on the higher end, but you're paying for more than just a meal--you're paying for a vacation in a bowl of noodles and a bao taco that doubles as a conversation starter. Recommendation: If you ever find yourself near The Grass Skirt, do yourself a favor and stop by. Whether it's the whimsical decor, the incredible Pig Maco Bao, or the spicy garlic noods, you'll leave with a full stomach and a huge smile. This place is a total vibe, and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a little escape and a lot of flavor. 5 out of 5 stars, and I'll definitely be back (with dreams of bao tacos in tow)! ”
“ Super Cool Tiki Speakeasy! This hidden gem off Grand Ave is definitely worth checking out. Parking can be tricky--street parking is free but limited, while the nearby lot managed by Ace Parking is easy to use but requires payment. The vibe here is so much fun! The Tiki-style decor sets the tone for a unique experience. The menu offers appetizer-sized "pupu" platters that are tasty but on the pricey side. Just a heads-up: portions are small, so it's not the spot to show up starving. The drinks, however, are a highlight! They have a fantastic selection and a full bar to cater to any preference. Service was spot-on, and the live music added to the ambiance without being too loud--perfect for catching up with friends. I'll definitely be back! It's a whole vibe and an awesome spot for a chill evening out. ”
“ Everything about this place is exceptional from the decor and ambience to the staff to the food. Everything about it over exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend this place if you're in town visiting or local ”
“ The tiki drinks are on point, every single drink we ordered tasted delicious, sweet and tropical. The glasses they were presented in were also very cute. The holiday decor was also super cute (we were seated in the enclosed patio area, and the seat cushions were heated!). Staff was super friendly and quick to come by. While the seating area was fine, and kind of semi private, it didn't seem like a fit for folks who wanted to order food (which we did), since the tables were so small and more like coffee tables than dining tables. We made it work, but it feels like the reservation system should allow you specify what kind of seats you want (aka do you want to order food). The food, especially when compared to the drinks, was kind of meh and overpriced. We really enjoyed the smoky eggplant dip, but you only get 2 slices of bread to eat it with, given how cheap a slice of toast is, they could opt to include more. We ended up having to eat the remainder of the dip with a spoon. The short rib tacos were probably my favorite dish, good flavor and you can add extra to fit your party size. The dan dan noodles were good, but the portion size definitely left a lot to be desired. I don't recommend the wontons or the tar tar cones, nothing special there and not worth the price. All in all, we enjoyed our experience here, but mostly for the tiki drinks. There were holiday seasonal drinks as well, and you can buy souvenir cups/mugs. However, the food left a bit to be desired, so probably better to eat elsewhere before you come! Also bring a jacket in case you get seated in the outdoor patio area and it gets chilly! Cute vibes but could do with some improvements. ”
“ Made it in for my birthday and caught Sippin Santa. It's fully decorated for Christmas from floor to ceiling which is amazing!! Drinks on both Hula holidays and sippin santa are delicious! Lots of options! They were out of the Snow Globe dessert which was a bummer. But there's Pop Pie around the corner! I'd like to come back during normal season to see it in full tiki also! ”
“ Fun tiki bar experience! The drinks are cute and the food is really good. The spicy tuna cones were amazing, the spicy on the chicken bowl was on point, and the eggplant dip had some nice kick to it as well. Love the Santa popup, but they will take a card to keep on file if you order from it. Recommend making a reservation, and please note that they only give you 1.5 hours to hang. ”
